PDO Threads in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro

PDO threads became famous as the "non-surgical facelift" — a nickname that helps explain the idea but calls for honesty: threads do not replace surgery in advanced laxity. What the technique does well, when properly indicated, is gently reposition tissues with early laxity and stimulate collagen along the threads. The difference between satisfaction and frustration lies almost entirely in correct indication.

What is pdo threads?

PDO (polydioxanone) is an absorbable material used for decades in surgical sutures. In harmonization, PDO threads are inserted under the skin with fine needles or cannulas, along strategic vectors.

Two combined effects: mechanical (gentle support and repositioning, in barbed threads) and biological (the body forms collagen around the thread, improving firmness and skin quality along its path).

The thread itself is absorbed in about 6 to 8 months; the collagen produced maintains part of the effect for longer.

Who are PDO threads for?

  • Mild-to-moderate laxity in the middle and lower thirds of the face.
  • Gentle jawline definition.
  • Slightly drooping brow tails (brow lift).
  • Collagen stimulation in specific regions (smooth threads), including the neck.

How the treatment works

  1. Candidacy assessment

Not every face with laxity is a candidate for threads — and saying that clearly is part of the job. We evaluate the degree of laxity, skin thickness and the realistic expected result. When your case calls for another technique (or surgery), you will hear it at the consultation.

  2. Procedure

Under local anesthesia, threads are placed along the planned vectors. The procedure takes around 40 to 60 minutes, with manageable discomfort.

  3. Evolution

There is an immediate repositioning effect, followed by a settling period (possible mild pulling sensation in the first few days). Collagen stimulation evolves over 2 to 3 months.

Results and how long they last

A more defined contour and gently repositioned tissues — a noticeable yet natural effect. The result is not (and should not try to be) that of a surgical facelift.

Support usually persists for 12 to 18 months, considering the combined effect of the thread and the collagen formed. In some cases it is shorter — metabolism and degree of laxity play a role.

Aftercare

  • Avoid opening your mouth wide (dental appointments, hard foods) for the first 15 days when threads are placed in the lower third.
  • Sleep on your back for the first week, if possible.
  • Avoid intense exercise for 7 days.
  • Mild pulling sensation and tenderness in the first few days are expected.

Frequently asked questions about pdo threads

Do PDO threads replace a surgical facelift?

No. In advanced laxity, surgery remains the reference treatment. Threads are excellent for mild-to-moderate laxity — and part of our job at the assessment is to tell you honestly which group your case belongs to.

How long do PDO threads last?

On average 12 to 18 months, combining the thread’s support and the collagen formed around it. The thread itself is absorbed in about 6 to 8 months; collagen maintains part of the effect afterwards.

Can PDO threads be combined with other procedures?

Yes — and they often are. Within the treatment plan, threads handle support while biostimulators address skin quality and toxin handles movement. Order and spacing between techniques are defined in the plan.

Do you see international patients?

Yes. Many patients combine a trip to Rio de Janeiro with their facial assessment and a staged treatment plan. The clinic is in Barra da Tijuca, at the O2 Corporate & Offices complex, with on-site parking. Start the conversation on WhatsApp (+55 21 97875-6337) in English and the team will coordinate your visit.

Is the consultation available in English?

Yes — consultations are available in English and Spanish. The assessment also includes VECTRA® 3D facial imaging, photographs and a written treatment plan, which makes communication even clearer.

This page is educational and does not replace an in-person assessment. Results vary from person to person; the right plan for your case is defined in consultation with Dr. Daniela Camanho (licensed dental surgeon, CRO-RJ 27965). Also available in Portuguese and Spanish.
