Botulinum Toxin (Botox) in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro
Botulinum toxin is the most performed injectable procedure in the world — and still surrounded by myths. The most common: that it "freezes" the face. A properly indicated application does the opposite of what the myth suggests: it softens excess muscle contraction while preserving expression. A frozen face is a sign of the wrong dose or technique, not a feature of the procedure.
What is botulinum toxin (botox)?
Botulinum toxin temporarily relaxes specific muscles of facial expression. Dynamic wrinkles — formed by repeated contraction when frowning, smiling or squinting — soften as a result.
The most treated areas are the upper third of the face: forehead, glabella (the "angry" line between the brows) and crow’s feet. There are complementary indications such as gummy smile and bruxism.
Important: the toxin treats the dynamic component of wrinkles. Lines already etched in at rest, volume loss and laxity call for other tools — which is why the complete assessment matters more than the isolated procedure.
Who is botulinum toxin for?
- Expression lines on the forehead, glabella and around the eyes.
- Prevention: softening contraction before lines set in at rest.
- Gummy smile (excessive gum exposure when smiling).
- Bruxism and masseter hypertrophy, with careful dental evaluation.
How the treatment works
-
Expression mapping
Your face is analyzed in motion: how you frown, smile, raise your brows. Points and doses are individualized — there is no standard recipe.
-
Application
The procedure is quick (around 15 to 20 minutes), with fine needles and minimal discomfort. You return to your activities the same day, with few restrictions.
-
Result and review
The effect starts to appear within 3 to 7 days, with full result in up to 15 days — when a follow-up checks the outcome and makes fine adjustments if needed.
Results and how long they last
A rested expression, without pronounced dynamic wrinkles — and with your face still moving naturally.
Average duration is 3 to 6 months. In some cases, especially first-time applications or faster metabolisms, it stays closer to 3. Regular maintenance tends to extend intervals.
Aftercare
- Do not lie down or lower your head for 4 hours after application.
- Avoid intense physical activity on the day.
- Do not massage treated areas in the first 24 hours.
- Avoid excessive heat (sauna, strong sun) for the first 48 hours.
Frequently asked questions about botulinum toxin
Does botulinum toxin freeze the face?
Not when properly applied. The frozen look comes from excessive doses or wrong points. Correct application softens excess contraction while preserving your natural expression — that is the standard of this practice.
How long does botulinum toxin last?
On average 3 to 6 months. It varies with metabolism, musculature and routine — in some cases closer to 3. Regular maintenance tends to lengthen the intervals.
Can botulinum toxin treat bruxism?
It can be a tool in managing bruxism and masseter hypertrophy, with careful evaluation — an area where Dr. Camanho’s dental background (licensed dental surgeon, CRO-RJ 27965) makes a difference in diagnosis.
